The Sofa Series

Black and white photograph of nature

Digitally manipulated with Lightroom, 2023

This series of photographs was created in my sophomore year of college, in my Photography class. Through this series, I focus on the internal identity vs. external perception and how a simple mirror can change one’s whole sense of self. Captured in stark black-and-white, I strip away the distraction of color to focus on form, contrast, and the emotional weight of self perception. By digitally manipulating the light in the reflections, I visualize the conflict between the self we present to the world and the emotions we bury. Through this series, I ask: Who do we become when our sense of self is dictated by what we see in the mirror, rather than what we feel in our bodies, hearts, or minds?

The Gaze

2023

This series was created in my sophomore year of college, in my Photography class. Through this project, we were challenged to depict some sort of problem, so I chose to explore self identity and how the perception of others can alter how we think about ourselves. In my first 3 images, I wanted to expose my subject, reveal more about her body and mind then what others may perceive. Could this reflect her vulnerability? Or the vulnerability of humans as a whole? Then, by introducing others into the shoot, I aimed to show how other’s thoughts, judgements, and perceptions reflect in our self identity. Are we defined through other’s perceptions? Where does our self identity stem from? Generally, I aim to challenge traditional methods of photography with experimental techniques such as (in this case) using flash + shaking the camera. I focus on creating depth and dimension to reflect the complicated layers of human identity and the intricate journey toward understanding our sense of self.
