Ribbed Security

18” 28” 11”, 2025 - Steel
This project was created in my senior year of college, in a class called Body Concept. I was instructed to create my own prompt, so I crafted: How can I provide myself with security and protection? My work started with many sketches and measurements of my torso, but gradually developed into repetitively using the plasma cutter to get the perfect shapes. Although this was my second steel sculpture I’ve ever created, I wanted to challenge myself by learning how to use new assets such as the plasma cutter and spot welder. Can learning new skills be additional ways to provide myself with security and protection? I used metal as a material, because although it is very bendable, it remains durable; this flexibility and adaptability is exactly how I envisioned strength and survival. As I began to wrap this piece around myself, I asked, does the feature of having this sculpture be wearable, actually protect me?
